Hello, Mike and all!
I would say in our case they are all pretty confident. It probably depends how it's framed at home: We never told them they were doing anything wrong or inappropriate by choosing to go barefoot, we just remind them of the risks and how to avoid them, for example, watch where you step and you won't get injured, only do this as long as it feels good. I also sometimes mention how they can be proud of their feet and never need to be ashamed of them.
It certainly also helps that we have three children and they have each other when going out together, all pretty much on the same page when it comes to barefooting, that's certainly easier than being the only child going barefoot which makes you stand out.
Having experience with numerous situations also builds up confidence in case someone gives them funny looks or remarks. Yes they also have a way of giving a big grin while lifting up a foot.
We aren't pushing them in any way, but let them decide. Now when we go out to a special event like a concert or are invited for dinner it seems like the children love to dress in fine clothes, actually brush their hair nicely and ... go barefoot as always! As mentioned before it's my daughter, now 12 years old, who loves to file her toenails nicely and occasionally apply toenail polish for special occasions.
Perhaps every barefooter, no matter how normal it is for them, has some situations where they don't want to stand out and prefer not to be as different from the rest ... I've just never observed that with any of my children. They are usually good at encouraging each other, should anyone hesitate. And when the big sister or little brother does it, it can't be wrong, right?
Children shy about their own feet: We have had that, when our children had friends of their age come visit us and they were perplexed to see we all walked barefoot in our house and garden. After a bit of hesitation they always joined us, well I reminded my children they better shouldn't make fun of others for being shy about their feet. Nobody should be ridiculed for going barefoot ... but nobody should be ridiculed either for preferring to cover their feet in whatever situation.
