Subject: TAKKY-INTERNAL SCSI STARTUP PROBLEMS

My internal SCSI drive problems continue. I was once able to boot from my internal 160 meg hd with the pre boot mac sound. I can always boot from an external 1 gig hard disk (id=4) but not from the internal 160 meg (id=0) hard disk. I have been able to boot from the 160 meg when I put it in my external drive. I've also noticed that whenever my external drive is attached (whether the drive is on or off) is the ONLY time that I will receive the famous MAC preboot sound. I always get the ? floppy icon. I know that the internal hd boots up because of the noise and having checked the voltage on the yellow is 10 volts & the red is 5 volts. I've substituted the external hd 1 gig in the internal SCSI with the same result ? floppy icon. As a matter of fact I have received the same ? floppy icon when 1) I shortened the first cable that I installed (had 2 connectors & I used the last) 2) installed a new cable then use the last connector 3) tried to reverse the cable at the m/b no go. Tried to attach good drive to the first and not the last connector & just once it tried to reboot then stopped and gave me a ? floppy icon. Wow I was encouraged and then attached (crimped) another cable with only one connector and received the same ? floppy icon. I was only able to boot consistently from the internal drive when I crimped the first SCSI cable. Whenever I booted to the sytem witout an internal & an external drive, I will receive the ? floppy icon. What can be causing this??
My theory is that I really have a 580 m/b & not a 630 because the System Profile identified my system as a 580. I have removed my IDE cable but was unable to boot my IDE drive when it was installed as per Takky's diagram & the opposite. (famous ? floppy icon) . The SCSI cable was supposed to be used for the CDROM in these systems & I want to use it for a hard disk, which should be a IDE for these computers. If the only time that I hear a familiar MAC preboot sound is when my SCSI network is terminated& that happens only when I connect my external SCSI (terminated) drive. If I can find a way to terminate the internal drive, with the proper jumper connections, would that not end this issue and then the drive would be recognized?? The final possibility is that I have not been properly crimping the SCSI cable to the m/b connector. This does take about 1/2 hour to do but I have never done a pin test with my ohm tester. I kept thinking that I could not make that same mistake 4 times. I have checked the pins & the metal connectors that attach to the m/b connector & they look normal. There is a possibility that the pin that controls the SCSI termination is not connected but could I have made that mistake 4 times?? Do you people know which pin controls the SCSI termination?

Thanks guys for all your help.
