Wow! I haven't met this one before.

Can we just clarify that the loss of colour is specific to certain logical areas of the screen, and not to certain physical areas.

For example, if the Lanucher window goes to b/w, and you then move the window, is the area of the screen background where the Lanucher window used to be still in colour or in black and white?

Second, have you tried booting from a floppy disc to check that it's not a s/w issuse?

Third, have you tried removing the VRAM and re-seating it - IMHO this is the obvious culprit, either in its seating or its speed. What are the last two characters on the chips on the VRAM - '-8' or '10'?
