Subject: "Dead" CC tip

It has come up several times on various mailing lists that I subscribe to, and I thought I'd clear up the subject once and for all now that I have had the experience and been able to fool around enough to know what's going on.

You'll occasionally come across a CC that appears to be quite dead, even when trying to start it from a known-good keyboard with the power turned on in the back. (The most common cause of "dead" CCs is that people don't use a keyboard when they try to start one.) If you have no reason to suspect the analogue board or tube, this is almost certainly a PRAM battery issue.

Here's where it gets weird, though. In some Macs, a dead or missing PRAM battery will cause a complete lack of video (or will require workarounds to get it to start with video). In the CC, a dead PRAM battery will cause a lack of video and will also prevent the CC from booting at all. If the battery is removed, however, it will boot just fine, with normal display on the monitor. (Of course, the CC works normally with a good PRAM battery installed.)

If you get a CC that seems dead, even when you hook up a keyboard, simply remove the PRAM battery from it and you should be fine.
