No need to keep the soap in the mouth during the spanking; just don't let them rinse while you give a few swats. The punishment lasts as long as the taste lingers.

Make sure it is a soap that won't hurt them if they swallow some. It will have the same effect whether it's a bar of soap - those small bars you get in hotel rooms are the right size - or on a washcloth.
