If a catheter is inserted correctly, it doesn't hurt at all! At most, it takes a little getting used to at first.
The catheter has the great advantage that urine control is completely eliminated and the constant wetting in no amount means that the diaper lasts an incredibly long time.
At the same time, the children become very aware of their dependency on diapers. A fantastic educational measure.
On the other hand, an open catheter in the diaper always means a fairly high risk of infection. Either the time period should not be exaggerated, or the bladder must be regularly flushed with a solution of ascorbic acid (vitamin C) to prevent infections. We always use Foley catheters, which are secured with a balloon in the bladder to prevent them from slipping out or being deliberately pulled out. Catheters are equally suitable for boys and girls, although inserting them is of course a little more complicated and difficult for boys than for girls. The thickness and length should always be adapted to the individual diapered child. I would be happy to support you if you need advice.
