He did not act up all at once, actually it was the opposite. He had been behaving perfectly the last few months of the school year. Then Memorial Day weekend he had an accident and hid it. This earned him a spanking and diapers for the weekend. During the month of June there were other incidents. You see, during the school year there is more supervision. He is at school all day then has various after school activities, chores, and homework. Much more structure. The summer is less structured leading to more behavioral issues.

The diaper does several things; 1) it forces him to come to me every few hours a change. 2) It is embarrassing. He wears regular big boy clothes but there’s a diaper sticking out the top of his shorts. This makes him think twice before acting up in public or leaving the house/yard. He also wants to play only with trusted neighbor friends or his brothers. All because there’s an underlying fear of being seen with it. 3) the bulky diaper, especially when wet, acts like an anchor slowing him down. 4) a diaper serves as a constant reminder that he’s still a little boy.

I’m a stay at home mom so I have the time balancing the boys. The 5 year old wears a diaper to bed every night and also gets DD. We’ve done DD with the 10 year old too but he seems to do better with other punishments like spanking. So why don’t we do DD on the 5YO more you might ask? We feel the sweet spot for DD is 6ish to 12ish. Before age 6 it’s really not that embarrassing or novel, after all they were wearing diapers for real just 24 to 36 months prior. Also younger kids might really regress, they don’t fully comprehend it is a punishment. A 7 year old is fully aware of the situation. After age 11 or 12 there are better options, plus they aren’t embarrassed by it. A 7 year old is trying to prove they are a big boy/girl and wearing a diaper is embarrassing, and feels like a set back. A 12 year old on the other hand knows they are a big boy/girl and while they are still embarrassed by it they might also laugh at it and not take it seriously.

Changing times are much more beneficial now that he’s older and can have conversations.

Regarding the Paw Patrol Luvs, he’s 7. He saw some familiar faces and got excited, that’s all. Luvs are a cheaper brand and he was a little uncomfortable in them. We prefer Huggies and Pampers, although he doesn’t like the smell of Pampers. We both LOVE Coterie diapers but they are expensive. They now come in size 7 so we might pick up a few packs for the next DD session.

The diaper should fit well and be somewhat comfortable. Unlike others in the DD world we don’t want him to be uncomfortable. Yes, it needs to be a little bit uncomfortable, it is discipline, but our goal is to teach him how to do better. Not make him feel uncomfortable and miserable.
