Subject: Thoughts on Soveriegn Bank Arena-Trenton

I went to the game last night, great job by the Stags to beat St. Pete's. I was very disappointed by the low turnout, crowds were sparse for a Saturday. One things about the FU and Iona-Niagara games - almost NO student support for any team, period. The FU student section was empty except the band, St. Pete's had about ten rowdy guys, Niagara had about eight guys in purple shirts, and that was about it. Pretty lame, but what do you expect? Trenton is a hike, a long drive from these schools (except St. Pete's).

Another thing - Trenton sucks. I'm sorry, but it's awful, and nothing to do at all near the arena. The bar on the first level concourse was closed, and the food stunk. There was an abandoned warehouse across the street that had a sign posted that a sports bar-entertainment center was coming soon, but that was it. We had to drive up Route one almost to Princeton to find some good places to eat like TGI Fridays and Chili's.

However, saving the night was the unexpected finding of a Fairfield reception at the top of the arena that we were able to go into. It was great, a nice carpeted area, food was great (good wings!) and the liquor wasn't cheap but it was good. Good job by FU to set this up, nice touch, we weren't expecting it.

All in all, one thing remains clear - the tourney has to find a permanent home closer to NYC. The virtual non-existent support of any student body makes this evident. I still remember going down to the Meadowlands with like 20 buses of students to see Holy Cross in the 80's, and we made so much noise it was great. Let me tell you, 20 buses of kids in an arena this small would have sounded like a freight train, the atmosphere would have been incredible.
But it never happened.

It would also be advantageous to have the student's spring break NOT coincide with the tournament. That was a big reason why there weren't any kids there.
