Subject: FEB. 24, 1979

I drove to the hospital in the wee hours of the morning in a sleet storm. At 10 AM my wife had given birth to my first child, a boy. We welcomed family during the day in the hospital. At 7 PM I was sitting in my seat at Alumni Hall to watch the dynamic duo of Joey deSantis and Mark Young receive their accolades in an emotional pregame ceremony and play their last home game on Senior night. By 10 PM, we had just knocked off a tough Boston College team. What a GREAT day!!! How many of you were there?

STAGGAL - I was 10 years old going to games with my dad for the first full season. I can remember walking into the gym with my dad, and people asking him if he had extra tickets to sell. No way said dad. Must have been another full house.

If it was the game where the Stags won 101-76, then I was there.

I believe this was if not the last then amonst the last games that Bob Zuffelato coached for BC. He was fired at the end of the season.

Ernie Cobb was a local guy from Stamford and he was the star of that B.C. team. The gym was packed on that night. The particular play that I remember was 6'10" Mark Young taking a long pass on a breakaway and finishing the sequence with a reverse slam dunk which brought the house down.

Was this the game that Students made a banner that said "Ernie Cobb cannot read this sign". It was a classic ..... back in the time when students not only came to games, but gave some thought and preparation about their opponent.

Prior to the game,I walked from the Student Center through the parking lot toward the gym. I passed a group of very tall guys in the parking lot huddled in a circle wearing BC sweats. A cloud of smoke made its way up to the sky... I was shocked and will never forget it. Once the game started, BC proceeded to get smoked by Joey D, Mark Young and gang.

I, too, remember that banner. It was great! I recall sitting way up high in the student section at the far end of the gym. The joint was rockin! BC was really rattled when they had to shoot fouls into the Red Sea. Unfortunately, that's an intimacy that the Arena can never replicate, even with a full house. Those were the days!

I remember being at that game- was in my soph. yr. @ FF.
A packed gym, electricity in the air and we ran them ragged! 100 points scored without a three point shot!! Ahh, now those were the days.......

I was there and can't forget it since my housemates were the "sign" creators. They paraded right in front of the BC team as they warmed up and they were visibily upset. The game was a great tribute to the careers of Joey Desantis and Mark Young. Young's reverse dunk was the highlight. I seem to remember that freshman Mike Palazzi had a big game as well. It's hard to believe that team didn't get an NIT bid, but it was harder to get any post season bid in the 70's.
