Subject: Harbor Yards- Home of the Fairfield Stags

Stag fans, we are at the beginning of what should be a nice multi year run of good Stag hoop teams given the teams youth and record this year. A part of that success has been and will be Harbor Yards. The Manhattan game was electric.
The future is now for the Stags and the success will come only with a commitment from several sources. Obviously,TOT must recruit and coach a good team. The remaining commitments must come from Fairfield Administrators, Harbor Yards and the Conn.Post/Stamford Advocate.
Newspapers: Click on the Siena site up above. Now click on the Albany Times Union. There is a dedicated site within the newspaper for the Siena Saints basketball team, complete with ticket give aways, a daily forum, pictures, etc. Why can't the Ct. Post create the same buzz for the Stags?
The Harbor Yards facility is first class, but the marketing is not up to speed. With 5,000 to 6,000 empty seats at each game, give the tickets away! People will come back to another game. The games are great fun. Marketing Dept:Go to Fairfield County McDonalds and offer a free admission to a child when accompanied by an adult with a kids meal purchase. This is not hard. Give the same deal to the school kids where the team reads. The players are good role models and the parents will like it. Use those guns that fire T shirts into the crowd after a dunk or blocked shot. Paint kids faces.
When I bought my season tickets I could not buy at center court on the bench side, as it was reserved for people who might buy tickets to every event that they put on. This may have been corrected but how ridiculous- do these people have families and other responsibilities, beyond nightly entertainment? Hockey fans want hockey and we want basketball (I did not want FF womens hoop tix but that was included in another dumb move). Make it simple. How about a sign on I95 showing a Deng Gai Block? Manute Bol is our biggest fan (literally)and is at a lot of games use him in a print ad or radio spot. (Joe Stag- why not a picture and post game interview with Manute on this site?)
The Fairfield Presidents Circle puts on a once a year black tie dinner in September. Why not a second event, like say tickets to a basketball game followed by a reception? Why not the same thing on all weekend games as a mini reunion for various classes? Alumni want to come back and this would be fun. Offer attending students the chance to win a semesters tuiton if their name is drawn and they can hit a half court shot. Move the students behind the basket. To the best of my knowledge, Brigeport built the facility and Fairfield U has done nothing to date. Please inform me of any role that the school has played.
Many years ago when the Nassau Colisiem was built, the college basketball tenant was Hofstra. There was no follow through and it ended dismally. It took Hofstra 20 years, to get a good coach (now at Villanova) and a good player(Speedy Claxton) who went on to the pros, to rebuild.
Hey, didn't The MAAC and Father Kelley arrive 20 years ago- and we now have TOT and Deng Gai is a NBA prospect... Let's maximize the potential of Harbor Yards.

WS Stag, I agree with you, it is time for all Stag fans to accept that the HarborYard venture is for real and for the best future for basketball. Bridgesports, who is part HarborYard owner and part marketer, has done a great deal of gratis work with FU to get this venture up and running which would benefit both FU and HarborYard. However, I think that in order to REALLY market FU and HarborYard, FU needs to come to the plate, so to speak, and put down some money (maybe the $570k the Univ saved by axeing Hockey and Football), and promote this program. I had to laugh when FU handed out free Thundersticks to the kids at one of the first home games this year. What a debacle! The following game, my two kids and my friends two kids had to experience MAJOR disappointment when Security made them pop their Thundersticks since they were not allowed at basketball games (DUH! nice promotion, FU). Face painting is an EXCELLENT idea! Tatoos for the kids (temporary of course), are also a fun idea. FU is probably afraid that if they give out free tix, that the season ticket holders will complain. However, I for one would just like to see more fannies in the seats and would not mind. Maybe FU could give out some concession coupons to season ticket holders to thank them. Billboards are another great idea, WS Stag. Maybe you should send some of these promo ideas onto Gene Doris and also Bridgesports, run by Ken Paul. I agree that we need more promotion in order to "bring the noise" :)

All these good ideas should be passed on to Gene Doris and Bridgesports. I am sure they would welcome the input. I would add:

- Anything that we can do to get kids and families more invoved is key. Reduce the price for kids
- Alumni have to be asked to buy season tickets, and asked to be sponsors
- Someone has to be 100% responsible at Fairfield for the success of season tickets, attendance, and sponsorships. It cant be just the AD or BridgeSports.
- That Marketing person(s) needs to motivated like all sales people.... by commissions and bonuses
- Money talks, maybe more Alumni/Friend giving should be redirected to Lyons Lademan/Men's Hoops.... but is up to each Alumni/Friend to do so.
- Sport stories in the CT Post and Stamford Advocate are the Best possible Marketing..... that needs to continue. Good job on that regard

[> [> [> Who should be the conduit to the AD with these ideas? -- STAGAL, 11:28:10 02/25/03 Tue

Earlier this year I harped on the advertising and marketing of Stag basketball, and JS asked for people who were interested to form a committee to bring new ideas to the AD. I let him know that I was interested, but nothing to my knowledge has been done. There are so many great ideas that have been posted, including the most recent ones above. I'm wondering if that committee idea should be revisited, and if so, than under whose direction? Should a private marketing firm be employed or could the School of Finance/Business be used to assist in this endeavor? How interested is the AD in promoting these ideas?

[> [> [> Drop ticket prices down - it will work -- Stagsfan, 14:20:54 02/25/03 Tue

I know of many alums who are not thrilled at the ticket prices and cost of food at Harbor Yard. Paying $18 to see St. John's is one thing, but $18 for MAAC basketball is another. A family of four must shell out $72 for four tix, and that's a lot for mid-major hoops. $72 to see a UConn-BC game, yes, but to see FU-Rider, no way.

We need to reduce ticket prices to about $14 and $8 for MAAC games, then raise them back up to $18 and $12 for big OOC games. I think attendance could go up for MAAC games.

And please will SOMEONE at FU try and take responsibility for marketing the home schedule! We need more mailers to alums around Septmeber. How about mailing a refrigerator magnet with a home schedule and picture of the inside of harbor Yard out to all alums within 50 miles? It sounds corny but believe me, things like this work. I have magnets from my plumber and church group on my refrigerator.

As head of 6th man club, what are your thoughts on this subject and could that committee be formed?

As head of 6th man club, what are your thoughts on this subject and could that committee be formed? Sorry for being such a pain, but there is definitely a passion for improving the way things are done which may benefit STAG basketball and its fans.

Stagal,

At the Last 6th Man Meeting, I did bring up the subject of the Fan's Marketing ideas, and I found out the Marketing meeting that had existed, which was attended by alumni and University staff, did not exist in that format anymore. Currently, the university staff and Bridgesports meet often to discuss what needs to be done. However, any Marketing ideas that Fans do have would be of interest of both Bridgesports and the University.

I would suggest sending any ideas to Ken Paul of Bridgesports and Gene Doris. But I also think that the idea if having a group of interested Alumni/Fans that meet with them on an ongoing basis could be a great thing. And that could be one of the suggestions that is made. The more people involved in the success of the program the better, and the ideas that everyone has are great.

I would love to organize something like that, but my plate is overloaded at this time.
