Re: Gonzo and Gai Blocks -- Stag83, 23:42:02 02/13/03 Thu
Gonzo should stop complaining and look in the mirror. He put Holmes in the game with 2 fouls and 36 seconds left in first half - where he quickly got his third...and eventually fouled out early in the 2nd half
I thought the blocks were good...maybe one was questionable..Gai was a big intimidator...Manhatten had much more trouble scoring down low as compared to the first game

A couple of things:
1) Most people and I suspect a lot of coaches don't even know what the rules are regarding goaltending/basket interference.
2) I would suggest that goaltending is one of the most difficult calls a ref has to make. People always say the block/charge is the most difficult, but that is a play that a good ref can anticipate and look for. Blocks often come out of nowhere and are unanticipated. Refs often have to shift gears when a potential goaltend occurs and by the time they realize what they have seen, it is too late. They don't have the benefit of replay, so this call is really a split-second decision that is very difficult to make.
Gonzalez had home court advantage, a screaming crowd, the better team, and he had to harp on a couple of judgment calls as the reason his team lost. Maybe he should look in the mirror because his team was favored by 11.5 and lost. Not very classy.

Just because blocks/goal tends are hard to call doesn't excuse missing them. The blocks were not the only issue. 40 free throws to 23 was another.

Re: Gonzo and Gai Blocks -- caller, 12:43:15 02/14/03 Fri
Where does this 23 FT keep coming from? Boxscore shows 27. And since two of the FT's came from the T, it is, in essence, only a 38 to 27 edge. but only a 4 PF difference. All that means is that FF fouled outside before the shots. If fouls were called each time there was contact, all games would end with 70 fouls minimum. Until you spend a game running up and down calling a game for TWO teams you couldn't care less about, focusing on a certain aspect of the game based on your position on the floor, you should make no comments as to the positive or negative of the refs. Yes you can say they missed a call here or there because you saw it while WATCHING for it - but to degrade them is purely poor loser status. (This is not to say I don't ever say reffing is stupid - but that's not why manhattan lost. Manhattan lost because they had less points on the board.) And with the amount of leeway Bobby G gets, it's a shock he hasn't had MORE t's called on him. And I'm not making a statement one way or another on him - it's just his coaching style and it's the refs choice as to whether he gets a t or not.

You've got to be joking. Or not thinking. That leaves 99% of fans unable to make any kind of statement on officiating.

Re: what????? -- caller, 16:48:13 02/14/03 Fri
Reread my statement. I didn't say you CAN'T make comments - I just said you SHOULDN'T. If you were to spend a game watching it from their perspective, watching a game between two teams they couldn't care less about, I think you would have a new respect for the job. But I am a huge supporter of freedom of speech and personal opinion. You're more than welcome to have your opinion, but I think there needs to be a little bit more thought before placing blame on refs, since there are THREE on the floor at one time, all with THREE different perspectives and THREE different opinions on the different teams, so to say that ALL THREE are somehow going against the one school, which is essentially being suggested when a comment along the lines of "the reffing sucked tonight" or anything similar, is a little bit presumptive. Perhaps from their three perspectives 1)they were blocked from view 2)looking at another portion of the action to find fouls out there 3)were human and made a mistake 4)and this is the big one, there was no foul per the rules. But like I said, feel free to whine and complain, but I think you need to spend some time looking at things from their perspective, not a biased fans perspective.

Gonzo wasn't whining, he was stating facts. They were screwed by the officials. I realize its the trend now to accuse a coach of whining when his team becomes the victim of bad officiating (especially significant in the MAAC) but that isn't real. A coach has to defend his team, and Manhattan lost first as a direct result of the officiating. which controlled the momentum of the game. (Not TOT's coaching) They even overcome a poor shooting percentage and were positioned to win at the end. Missing at the buzzer any other time is a legitimate loss and you get a legitimate win. But not this game. Not this time.
The 40 FT to 23 FT were the first figures out. It's actually 40 FT to 27 FT. There were about 20 uncalled fouls against Flores. and at least 8 additional points that should've been Manhattans from the uncalled goaltending. You do realize that the officiating in this game is being talked about over three states. There's lots of gossip about Hughes (head official). So be careful. I wouldn't be throwing stones right now at Manhattan players or the coach.
Manhattan is a talented team, Fairfield is a talented team. But for Fairfield fans to mock the coach and justify that horrid excuse for a game is a real insult to your dignity.
