Subject: Stamford Adv on Stags chances at post-season..TOT comment
Stamford advocate reiterates TOT's comment about "first place" and importance of league standings at this point...
FAIRFIELD
Record: 14-8
MAAC: 10-3, 2nd
RPI: 93
Sagarin rating: 132
The Stags' postseason hopes got a big lift after Thursday's upset victory at Metro Atlantic Athletic Conference-leading Manhattan.
Fairfield was a mediocre 2-3 dating back to its Jan. 23 home loss to Manhattan, but now there's every reason to believe the Stags can capture the MAAC Tournament and an automatic bid to the NCAAs.
The Stags are just one game behind the Jaspers, but don't get caught up in the league standings. The NCAA berth will be decided on a neutral court when the MAAC Tournament is staged at the Sovereign Bank Arena in Trenton, N.J., so seeding isn't crucial.
As much as a Fairfield-Manhattan final seems inevitable, the Stags could face an obstacle in Niagara, which beat Fairfield last Sunday at the Arena at Harbor Yard. The two teams will meet again on Saturday, and if the Stags get swept their road to the MAAC final could wind up being bumpier than expected.
With 14 wins, including one over Manhattan, Fairfield can pretty much guarantee itself an NIT spot by winning four of its five remaining regular season games and reaching the MAAC Final.

What a load of crap. If the MAAC has taught us anything, it's that the expected rarely happens. I could very easily see one if not BOTH of the aforementioned teams not playing on Monday night.

I find myself agreeing with Guy -- Reindeer Fan, 17:19:22 02/18/03 Tue
Any team in the conference can win this thing. St. Peters and Iona have proven they can beat manhatten, and Niagara, Siena, and Rider have proven they can beat Fairfield. At this point the only sure beat is that Loyola will be watching the finals from home.
This article was written before the embarassment on Monday despite the date it was published. Fairfield now needs to win all remaining games in my mind to have a shot at the NIT. Another conference loss or a loss in the tournament and Fairfield's post season hopes are over.

As much as I want to believe that this is the Jaspers yr, the last two losses has shown me alot. The Jaspers actually have weaknesses, playing against different teams there weaknesses are exposed differently with each team.
The top five teams all have a chance at Monday. Just when I thought the Jaspers were the king of the hill. On a tier and plateau of itself............To be Continued.

Below were my predictions from 2 weeks ago, I don't think I would change a thing right now. I also don't agree that its likely that Mahattan and Fairfield will Matchup in the Finals.... the odds of that happening is too small. But I would say that I am more confident than any other year that the Finals will be between 2 teams from the top 5. That has not been a sure thing in the MAAC.
Chance at winning the MAAC Tourney
-----------------------------------
Manhattan - 25%
Fairfield - 17%
Iona - 12%
Niagara - 12%
Siena - 12%
Canisius - 5%
Marist 5%
St Peters 5%
Rider - 5%
Loyola - 2%

I too agree. No team should feel comfortable (as is always the case in the MAAC). The Stags certainly should not feel comfortable. They had a nice seven game winning streak, but that was a few weeks ago. Outside of the streak, they are 8-9. Hardly a guaranteed ticket to the finals.

Basically the group of Fairfield, Iona, Siena and Niagara are 15-18 win teams..... not much difference; however, seeding will be somewhat important. Manhattan had established itself as a notch better, but with the two losses ..... its a very small notch.
I agree, no team should be comfortable.... except maybe the #5 seed cause they open with Loyola..... but after that they would play #4 and #1.... thats the toughest bracket this year.
