Subject: 2 Problems - But the same Cause
I saw two problems in Niagara Game, but both of them are from the same cause.
On offense the team needs to shoot-it from the outside. Its not a question if we can make it.... I think we can. But we are passing up open looks just to feed it inside for a tougher shot or a turnover. We are even do it against a zone. Our players are just looking inside, the fan scan see it, and obviously opur opposition sees it. In yesterdays game in particular, there was a lock of ball movement by pasess on the outside or players moving without the ball. IMO, that has a lot to do with Delfico out of the line-up, as he did not play well, was in fould trouble the whole game and only played 13 minutes.
On defense, were are a much slower team than we were earlier in the season. Our press is not as effective with our Big line-up, and Garcia trying to trap in the backcourt, and then trying to get back on "D". Not only is our feet not as quick, but hands are not as quick either. Gai blocked 5 shots yesterday, and I don't think we got possession on any of them. Some has to do with him blocking it out of bounds, but more so, we were not quick enough to get the loose balls. There are a lot of Loose balls in basketball.... nobody keeps stats on who gets the loose balls, but its a huge part of a game.
The cause of the problem is that we have transformed from an agressive, quick, hard working team, into a slow, reacting type of team. We are playing too many of the Big players at the same time, and thats affecting the "O" and the "D". We cannot play 3 Big guys (Gai, Thomson, Garcia, Ajou) up front at the same time...... we have gone from an exciting defense, to a painfully slow defense From adding up the minutes of Gai, Thomson, Garcia, and Ajou. We had 3 of those Big Men on the frontline for about 10-13 minutes...... The should never be out there together. Matter of fact those 10-13 minutes should go to the smaller line-up of a 3-guard offense, or a Delfico-Maxwell forward combo...... boy those were the days..... some exciting basketball......I can still remember them well:
- the Delfico-Maxwell combo starts at Fordham because of Oscar's injury, and our press was awseome.
- Maxwell hit hs first 10 shots at Marist, scores 25 , carries the team ..... playing inside at the POWER FORWARD
- Michael Bell burying shots at Fordham, as most of those 2nd half points come with 3 guard offense and Bell at SF
- The countless other times the team was quick so Todd's talent can be utilized, and Gai ran the floor finishing with some dunks.
Boy those were the days.
Quick teams win, quick players make other players better, even the big men...... why are we so enamored with a Big Line-up.????????

I thought I would never say it, but Ajou Deng needs to be sitting. I do feel bad for him because he no where near the player he was last year. No guard production was our biggest problem last night, and if Sogadzi didn't save us against Canisius we might have lost that one too. Bell looked quick defensively, but did not shoot with confidence. We need him healthy.
I would also vote for more speed on this team, but if thats the case, Delfico might be spending more time on the bench. Tim, needs to right this ship because its going in the wrong direction.
I used to post on the old Rivals board, but I just found out about this board.

Fairfield's strategy yesterday was to work the ball inside and try to get some fouls on Reaves, Mendez and Darden, forcing Niagara to use its mediocre bench. Didn't work, obviously, and probably won't work next time, either. On Feb. 22, the guards will need to hit their shots, which, in theory, will open up the lane, leading to an offensive smorgasbord and lots of points. In theory.
I agree about Ajou—he's hurting us right now. He should get the chance to push it against Rider, St. Peter's and Loyola, but I'm not optimistic he'll find the groove in time to help us in March. What a shame. After everything he went through to come to Fairfield, he deserved a better senior year.
Bell, however, is another story. I don't think he'll be 100% until next November, but he did show quickness yesterday. If he finds his shot, he will help.

Not necessarily the problem -- Big Line up, 15:30:07 02/10/03 Mon
I don't feel the big line up is as much of the issue as the stags unwillingness to take the outside shot. I don't mind Thompson Gai and Deng in the line-up if Ajou and Gai are taking 3 points shots. But to continually pass up wide open three in order to force the ball into traffic, that's a big problem. Fairfield is last in the Maac in three point shots attempted. Ajou Deng was among the league leaders last year in 3 point percentage. There's no point playing Ajou if you are not going to let him take the three.
The story against Siena, Cansius, Niagara and Manhatten has been the same. When we don't turn the ball over forcing it inside, they get three points for our two because we don't shoot enough from the outside. The seasons is over if we don't adjust, we have become too predicable and too easy to defend.

I do agree that our unwillingness to take the outside shot is an issue, but I feel the bigger issue is our lack of quickness on defense...... mostly in the frontcourt. And when we are playing well, our defense has been creating our offense. That how we have been winning..... strong defense and gutting it out.
And for all of you that think we have the best talent in the league, should really open your eyes..... Niagara has the best starting 5 in the league, and IMO, we are similar to Iona and Siena in talent, and probably behind Manhattan because of Flores. But our advantage is the Double "D' ==> Defense and Depth. Once we stop playing Defense, we won't win.
Defensive talent, I think we are #1 in the MAAC, Offensive talent, we are around 5-6-7.

Re: Not necessarily the problem -- Stag 92, 07:13:34 02/11/03 Tue
Talent is the key when discussing defense. Fundamentally, we are poor (don't know how to box out). Our press is effective at times, but when broken, leads to a Gai tremendous block, a Gai foul, or an easy hoop.
I agree that we don't chuck it when we should, but has anybody seen the rotation on our shots (exluding Bell and Delfico)? It's pretty scary. Hopefully our recruits can shoot the basketball.
A positive is Gai stepping out and hitting the 12-15 footer (not the 3). He is become very complete and scary good.
Stagman's post about the stats below is a true sign of issues on this ballclub. Again, we don't play offensively down low very well, we don't rebound properly and we can't shoot the 3. Yet, we have won our fair share of ballgames. My biggest issue is our breakdown fundamentally.

Joe Stag, Your points are valid, but one thing is perfectly clear. We are always pressing teams no matter how talented their guards are or how prepared they are for us. Also, our offense is so predictable it isn't even funny. Any team that doesn't zone us up, is absolutely stupid. Tim, it is time to do something that should be done every game...ADJUST,ADJUST,ADJUST........
