Doris has been good to timmy O -- JCM, 23:37:20 01/20/03 Mon
I think Doris has helped TOT immensely, and his public criticism may have been just what Tim needed. The old Tim O'toole would have fallen to pieces tonight, yelled at the refs, gotten two technicals, and made herky jerky player moves. O'toole had a strategy to force the ball inside and when it didn't work, he coached and adjusted his game plan. A fine job tonight, that might not have been possible if Doris had not told Mr. O'toole what was expected of him. And even though the deal is not signed yet, don't think O'toole hasn't already heard from Doris that he is good to go for another 2 years...

Doris set the Criteria and has been very objective -- JoeStag, 23:49:19 01/20/03 Mon
IMO, Doris has been very fair to TOT, and setup up some very fair, resonable, and objective goals: A Winning Season, Win the close games, play better fundamental hoops. All three of those have and will happen.
I am sure that Doris will do the right thing for TOT and the University. No reason to jump into a quick extention or quick renewal. A proper contract should be designed that benifits both parties. I am sure that those plans are in the works.

Re: Doris set the Criteria and has been very objective -- jenningsbeach, 00:32:11 01/21/03 Tue
In my mind, Tim was never in any real danger. I thought 14 wins was the magic number, and I even figured a 12-15, 11-16 season could be "spun"—Deng and Gai missed 6 games, Logan's out for the season, etc.—to re-up O'Toole for one year. If the team completely unraveled, and Tim put up a Mitch season—you know, 7-20—then I thought he'd lose his job.
I'm ecstatic for Tim—and for us—that things have turned out this way. I hope he and Doris work out the details; in fact, I have no doubts they will. It's taken longer than I thought, with many missteps along the way, but we've finally arrived at the place I thought we'd be when Tim was hired. It's awesome to see the Stags finally personify what O'Toole brought to the table as a player: heart, courage, hustle, poise and a never-say-die attitude.
Yes, I know 11 games remain. But this team is not going to collapse. They will be the No. 1 or No. 2 seed in Trenton.

What are you guys realted to Gene :)? Has he promised you good seats? :)ha-ha But honestly- I think you guys are giving Gene too much credit. I have a feeling there is president named Father Kelly who calls the shots up there- Gene doesn't make a big move without the good fathers suggestion/approval. I guess if I was TO - I would feel loyalty to no one. Imagine if your boss gave you an ultimatum in the paper like that. Gene could have said it behind doors-to TO directly- but to say it like that to reporters was classless. I've said it here and I'll say it again- I think the AD is a big part of the program's problem. Maybe it's time for that to change. Is GD of the right pedigree, character and style to run a winning program? Harbor yard- blah-blah-blah. That wasn't a tough one. I think taht's a ? Fr. kelly should ponder....

Doris did the right thing -- JoeStag, 07:53:26 01/21/03 Tue
Doris did the right thing when he went public with his expectations of the Program and TOT. He did to take the heat off Time and it worked perfect. Remember when he went public with the CT Post articles...... the Stags were 6-15 and had just come off some devasting defeats.
He took to heat off TOT and basically said that HE will answer the questions. Doris was loyal to TOT, but he was also loyal to the University, and the thousandss of fans in the community that needed to know where this program was going. With Fairfield's move to the Bridgeport Arena, we cannot be a small time, and think all decisions need to stay within the rought iron railings on North Benson Road.
Doris was straight forward, honest, direct, consistent, accessible, and very objective..... what else can you ask of a person in that situation. He also set up some realistic goals that TOT has blown away this year, and at the end of last year. And I believe that he also got more involved, to help TOT improve as a coach. IMO, Doris handled the situation perfect.
The whole Blueprint of playing Tough, High Level Competition is not just the idea of the Men's Basketball program, but its the strategy of many of the High Tier programs at Fairfield..... all that is the result under the leadership of Gene Doris.
It just took a little longer for Men's Hoops.

Re: Doris did the right thing -- Threepointer, 11:22:24 01/21/03 Tue
Where are the thousands of fans that you talk about...? Are they hiding in the Harbor Yard? Or are they still in Alumni Hall? As for the high level of competition do you really believe that GD had anything to do with getting Duke on the schedule (or UCLA, et al. ). I believe TOT has had many good mentors like Coach K, Jim Boheim, Tommy A, who have had far more of an impact on his coaching career and style than high school basketball coach GD. I would bet the only advice he takes from GD is which airlines to use, which hotels FU can afford and which bus company is available that week. Take a closer look at the role of this AD and then maybe you would understand. Thanks for your comments but I tend to disagree.

Doris is doing a good job -- JCM, 08:51:53 01/21/03 Tue
When Doris first took his job, I sent him a letter listing 12 issues I had with the way Fairfield was running its basketball program. I had sent such letters previously to the university without result. Doris however addressed these issues promptly correcting more than half the problems immediately and putting steps in place to address the remainder over the long term. While I don't agree with everything he's done, he certainly has done a better job than the previous AD who ignored all of these issues.

Deng Gai's suspension was not only warranted, it wasn't harsh enough. Be glad he's still in school.

How do you know???
Was it worse than the St. Johns star who was arrested for the physical assault of a woman? ST. Johns didn't suspend him..He just played/plays on while the school conducts their investigation.

Do you want Fairfield to run their program like St. Johns? I do know what happened but I don't think I should post on this site. If you want to send me your email addy, I can tell you.
