I've been calling it professional basketball ever since it started. It's also a TRADITION KILLER. There I said it ! The demarcation line began when all of this was initiated. Who's going to be added to the college Hall or Wall of Fames ? The answer is either nobody OR the kids who stay one or 2 years. Can you imagine a kid having his number retired after only one year or so ? Or how about a kid be inducted into his college hall of fame based on one year with numbers like 800 points , 270 rebounds etc..

No matter whether it's collegiate or pro sports, the powers that be just can't help but tinker with, and destroy the games.

"The powers that be", to my understanding, are the US courts, not the NCAA, and what a bloody, horrid mess they've made of everything...no wonder coaches quit in mid-season.

It was suggested that (and I thought I would never say this), Niagara will be somewhat forced to play 6-7 money games just to remain in D-1. Larranaga's kids quit on him as he lost 8 players to the portal.

Now that some years have passed and schools have beefed up their NIL funds, they are now legally poaching each others players. Now the big boys are getting hurt themselves by fellow big boys.

The irony here is that all 8 of Larranaga's kids who quit on him said they were happy at Miami...they were just chasing the money.

Maac teams and mostly all mid majors will not exist in the d1 landscape within 5 years.
They’ll exist. In some d2 or d3 format.

Disagree, RCM. Don't get me wrong, I know where you're coming from and understand your prediction, however, I believe that Niagara will continue to play D-1 ball, as long as the portal exists. There are more kids available than program capacity. If kids like J. Martinez are coming from California to play ball at NU with little to no NIL money, that tells me that kids will continue to reach out just to get a free education and play the sport that they love. And remember, some of these less talented kids will also know that they might get a chance to play pro ball overseas; and if they can improve overseas, some might be able to make it to the NBA.

Now I don't disagree with you entirely. Some programs , like St. Francis, NY did, could end their basketball programs, while others could drop down to D-2, D-3, or even NAIA. But I think that the large majority of mid and low major programs will survive at the D-1 level.

If division 1 continues in basketball, it will officially be recognized as D1 and D1a similar to football's FBS and FCS. They are both D1 but....

That's also a great point, Gt. Very conceivable.
