How long is Paulus willing to coach unsuccessfully at Niagara ? I'm sure that he knows he's a good coach. GP knows his Xs and Os and has the temperament to deal with today's student athletes and the media. However, continuous losing seasons, .500 seasons and barely above water endeavors with no post-season tournament bids to show for his efforts , must be weighing on him. Furthermore, I don't think GP is in it just for the money. I'm sure with Coach K's help he could certainly land a very good assistant coaching job somewhere else. We all know that Paulus wanted a head coaches position and most certainly likes being in that role; but I have to believe that he hates losing and his lack of success has to be eating away at him. Certainly, the portal and NIL only adds to that frustration.

A very good question, Soup..GP wouldn't be the first D1 coach to quit because of NIL and the portal...and you're right, it has to be killing him to recruit an entirely new roster year after year and coach them up all over again, only to finish the year at .500 or worse...time will tell, but I suspect this won't be his last year at Niagara.

Paulus is a young guy making very good money for WNY. He is now raising young kids in his family. He is from CNY so he has extended family nearby. He has been an assistant coach at 3 other programs and must realize the job insecurity of that position . (The head coach gets fired and you most likely lose yours. )
He represents NU very well so he has little pressure. While there must be frustration ,I think he has adapted to the new rules of college basketball pretty well.

The hype around x's and o's is overblown when you don't have the Jimmy's and Joe's.

The AD at Niagara has been in the job for over 10+ years, transitioning from an FCS school to Niagara and sticking around ever since. Working at NU is a cushy position, not just in athletics. There's virtually no pressure, with only a small number of people genuinely interested in the sports program. The operation runs on a bare-bones basis. Surprisingly we have two message boards for the tiny amount of people that attend games.

These are all good points.
As seen in other sports...It is virtually impossible for Paulus to get fired. Not saying he should. But job secruity is important. The biggest hurdle he faces is using NU's limited resources to propel him to the next level. This usually only comes with winning and doing so for a few years.

NU's MO seems to be trading term of contract for dollars. If Greg wants to stay I suspect he will be able to ride that for quite some time.

He seems to run a clean program. No off court issues, no scandals. And very low pressure since his team is turning over so much. When was the last time an NU player graduated from NU? When was the last time a player stayed four years?

JAM's strategy was to always be the best in 3 and 4 of a good recruiting cycle. Ride the wave of a young team and have them peak when the core is set to graduate.

I think GP is a good coach. And is probably playing a hand he knows isnt winnable. He surely loves what he does and gets paid nicely to do it. His kids stay out of trouble and that at NU will get you a life time of employment

He's a Division I head coach. Those guys don't leave for a job that's not another head coaching job, unless your a Chris Casey and be climbed back up again. He's closing in on $300 with benefits if he can keep us in the top half, he is working hard and succeeding. The whole landscape of college coaching burped too along with the portal, however it's always the relationships you make along the way at our level.
