I agree to a certain extent that there are some Catholic and even some non-Catholic small and medium sized colleges and universities in the same straits as NU, however, there many that are not, eg, St. Bona, which is even smaller than Niagara. St. Thomas, MN, St. Mary's CA, Iona, Duquesne, St. Louis, LaSalle, etc., that are above the water financially, speaking.
When will Niagara return to the NCAA tournament or NIT ? Will it be in a few years, a decade, two decades ? Heck, I'd even settle for the CBI or CBIT.
I'm tired of seeing college programs that are in their infancy of NCAA D-1 hoops going to the Big Dance while Niagara goes nowhere.
Now NU can't even beat a Merrimack or an NJIT or a Mt. St. Mary's. When was the last time Niagara upset Syracuse (Colgate did it 2 years in a row) ? We are lucky to play the Bonnies once in awhile or St. John's every 5 years or so. I not only miss JAM, I miss the real excitement of Niagara basketball.
Siena and Iona no longer have the stability they had with their previous coaching staffs . Now the Pitino's , etc, are gone and the coaching carousel has found its way to Loudenville and New Rochelle. The MAAC is a lousy low major D-1 conference; and Niagara is what it is. There's no Taps, Frank, Calvin or JAM to revitalize its basketball program, as was the case in past eras. The fun and excitement is GONE, perhaps forever. You don't even hear Eagle Mike talking about a resurgence , like he did in the past. The writing is on the wall AND it has been for quite some time. AND even that writing has started to fade with time.
