CHAPTER 3
It was Aubbress's turn to watch the dibbuns, which she gladly agreed to do. Laughing at their antics, she didn't notice that Diviniah, the current badgermum, had come up behind her, until she heard a rumbling voice, "You've done a good job so far, now I will take over. The Abbot wants you to come to Great Hall as quickly as possible. He and some others are holding a very important meeting."
A slightly surprised look on her face, Aubbress ran to Great Hall. Upon entering, she saw a strange sight. Everyone sat at a long table, except for a young squirrel like herself, holding Martins sword. Quietly taking her seat, she listened intently as the Abbot explained why the meeting had been called, "Revin Treedart here, had a dream last night, in which Martin the Warrior appeared." Then he told everyone the words, which Martin had spoken. After the whispers had died down, he spoke again, "Yes, Martin said all that, but the part that we are interested in is this:
'Where water falls, without a sound,
Where brave warriors bones lie,
That shall be your battleground,
Where one of you must die.'
A plump shrew-wife wrinkled her nose, "What's that s'pposed ta mean?"
Aubbress smiled and jumped up, "I know what it means!"
Revin rushed over to her, "Really? Abbot Jerl and I studied it all morning and we couldn't make heads or tails out of it!! Please tell us."
Aubbress laughed, "Your parents never told you of the place o' no return? I guess not! Anyway, they used to chant this rhyme to me whenever I didn't want to go to bed. It went something like this:
If you are naughty, and stay awake,
Then you to the place o' no return we'll take.
Many warriors 'ave gone there before you,
And their bones you will meet there, aye, 'tis true!
The last thing you will e'er see,
Is the water that falls without a sound.
You'll stay there for longer than eternity,
'Til your bones, too, litter the ground!
As Aubbress finished the chant, a shocked silence filled the room, finally broken by the Abbot, "Aubbress, did your parents ever tell you if that place actually existed?"
Aubbress nodded slightly, "Yes, when I was just out of dibbunhood I asked mom, and when she answered me, she was dead serious."
Everyone leaned in closer, asking impatiently "Well what did she say?"
Aubbress’s voice was barely above a whisper, as she replied,
"Sh.. She said yes!!"
