All source analysis coupled w/ some good old mother's intuition would dictate that the purpose of that pipe is to shower his competitors windshield w/ stray aluminum and steel hard parts, in hopes that he will either maim the driver in the left lane, or render the competitor's vehicle inoperable by bursting the front/right tire.
There is a method to his madness after all. I hear that he's going to remove the 4 doors for the race also. What crude means of redemption. Don't do it Mike. Go get some sleep instead; it'll be a long day tomorrow. (try not to think about the sound of Big Nasty's 571 thundering at 8200 rpms, then the silence.)
