Hello,

I found some strange maggot/worm type larve in a bucket that has been filled with stagnant water for some time, they have long tails that they seem to use to attach themselves to debris when trying to move around. They are a whitish color and do look like large maggots. Any idea what these strange creatures are and should I be alarmed?

Angela although I do not know what they are, If you live in the dunstable area bring a sample of water + creatures to our next meeting Jan 8th 8-00pm Farley Hill Methodist Church Hall Northdrift Way Luton and I am sure somebody could help you on the night.
If this is not possible try your local fish shop. Please let us know what happens

Subject to seeing them I would say they are leeches. Do not get them introduced to your tank or pond. They will attach themselves to the fish and draw blood. Throw water down drain and steralize the bucket.
Hope this helps.

Hi Angela,
You have Rat-tailed maggots in your bucket. The 'tail' is actually a breathing tube, (snorkel). They feed on rotting vegetation and other detritus, and are completely harmless.
They pupate, and emerge as flies.
I have found that some large cichlids will eat them.
