Angela although I do not know what they are, If you live in the dunstable area bring a sample of water + creatures to our next meeting Jan 8th 8-00pm Farley Hill Methodist Church Hall Northdrift Way Luton and I am sure somebody could help you on the night.
If this is not possible try your local fish shop. Please let us know what happens

Subject to seeing them I would say they are leeches. Do not get them introduced to your tank or pond. They will attach themselves to the fish and draw blood. Throw water down drain and steralize the bucket.
Hope this helps.
