Also an important note is that if you installed a non-Sony version of Windows98 like the eariler posted link suggests the drivers won't "stick".

The system continually reinstalls it's own drivers that just don't work. I wrestled this for hours.

The Sony recovery CD's have the drivers but Win98 thinks it has better ones and Plug and Plays the devices every time you reboot. Even with disabling PNP in the BIOS.

You may eventually get the drivers to load...but it's not worth the trouble. Poor video and no sound is what you'll have.

The only safe way then is to back-up the old Win98 in DOS and then copy Win98 again onto C:\ without tampering with any of the old files. You have to also create a back-up directory so your file trees can be restored.

This is pretty advanced for most of us.
