Give them credit for one thing: at least they admit the church was started from the vision of a teenager. The Hal Lindsey Rapture crowd won't admit, or don't even know that no church father in orthodox Christianity had ever heard of "The Rapture" as taught by the way-out crowd, until a teenage girl in Edinburgh during the 1820's, dreamed it up, vision or not. This girl is so anonymous that I can't even remember her name.

But, of course, once the history of the church has been forcibly devolved, Joseph Smith, Jr. will disappear off the radar. Studying the history of the RLDS church has gone from being a scholarly endeavor to script-writing for "Back-To-The-Future IV."

Steve Veazey pops up in the drive-way in the Time Machine, and tells Marty -- "Marty, you've got to help me. I've discovered that the RLDS church was started by a lust-crazed teenager with a public school education, and we've got to go back and fix this now!" The only question the scriptwriters have at this point is whether Mr. Veazey was hit by lightning before or after he came up with this idea.

The plot would be very difficult to swing. I doubt that Mr. Veazey and Marty could work things around to the point that Professor Anthon comesame out from Columbia to have a vision and start an Mormonism. Maybe they could manage to kill off Joseph Jr. before he invented polygamny. They can't get rid of him altogether, because he begets Joseph III before he dies, and the tinkerers can't eliminate that.

I think what eventually will happen is in flitting from AD 30 to 1823 to 1835, and back to Apostatic times in the 400's that they'll make a mess so big that big that they kill off Jesus before the crucifixion, or Mary before the Nativity, and then they'll be pleased with the results of their incompetence. After all, they are convinced the world would have been a better place without a religion that claims it is the only way to salvation. How they plan to kill off all these other religions, including their own formerly,) that claim the same thing, will be a real challenge.

George
