Subject: I think DD was dressed by Gillian Anderson's wardrobe lady.
In reply to: c_shantal 's message, "DD on Letterman; A missed opportunity." on 09:21:50 04/05/00 Wed

The first thing I thought of when DD walked out on stage was , here comes Scully. Note the hangy out shirt with the suit. That looked really dreadful. As for the rest of the show.... [and I did see it. I taped it as it is on at 1;30 in the morning]... well I thought the whole thing was as boring as hell. Letterman and I'm afraid to say all/most US talk show hosts are up to sh#t. All they do is try to be funny and it is so scripted and false. What happened to asking a bunch of interesting questions and getting interesting and informative answers and letting the humour come from the actor[DD]'s and host's natural whit, charm and talent? This fake format is such an insult to the guests and the host who I'm sure is capable of doing much better. As an end result we heard nothing about XF. Fine, but we also got nothing about DD's new movie. One clip and no info. Oh yes that comedy actress. One sentence about how funny she is. Well done DD you managed to get that out. I would have loved to have heard more. I think the stuff about the lawsuit was just tongue in cheek stuff. That was so obviously staged I guess inorder to poke fun at people for always bugging DD about it and also to get it out of the way. It did waste alot of precious time though. They should have left the staged humour alone because the interview fell apart after that.

I couldn't believe it when that stupid coffee gag came over. Did Letterman do that on purpose or does he not realise when he is drinking the stuff? If that is the case then what an idiot! And if it was on purpose then how rude! Of course it may have been contrived and if so then DD obviously took it as it was supposed to be but he did look surprised and maybe a bit upset that it happened but he didn't look that upset. I liked DD's humour. He was extremely dry. Almost crackly. I loved his psuedo serious expression. Whether it was real or designed to cover the fact he was pissed off I couldn't tell.

But I was just disappointed because if someone is going to be on a talk show then the idea is to find out stuff not to watch them go through a lame, contrived comedy routine with the host. I've seen hundreds[no kidding] of local live to air interviews, [one with GA] where the host/ess asked great questions about the guest, their show, their other persuits etc and the guests, including GA, turned it into a fun interview with their own humour and anecdotes. Apart from the interviewer's questions there was no script with ad-libbing being second nature. All interviews, especially with stars, ended warmly with much naturally sincere thanks and big welcomes to return again and in many cases the host/ess has developed long lasting friendships and acquaintanceships with the stars or guests. DD's interview did not seem to end on a naturally warm and friendly note.It was very stiff and staged.

Sorry if I may sound harsh and I don't mean to put down the general population of American Talk show hosts[I do love Barbera Walters and I thought Roseanne's show was pretty hot.] but I was really disappointed with this interview ,[if you can class it as that] and I just wish DD would come here to promote Return to Me so I can actually find out something about him and his movie. [what a shame they've canned Midday with Kerrianne. I'd love to see that DD interview. ]
Remember this is only my disappointed opinion. I am not being culturally critical in general, only in the area of talk show hosts. While I'm on the subject I think Rosie O'D, Lenno and Letterman SUCK! [translation=are really terrible]
