it has to do with revenue-sharing from when broadcast rights to shows are sold to cable companies for reruns or for video release. From what I understand, the current agreements date from the mid-80s, when there really wasn't just a whole lot of money to be made from cable contracts or video sales - a situation that has obviously changed in the past 15 years.
In essence, it seems that the entire Screen Actors Guild is perturbed about, basically, the same thing that led to Duchovny suing Fox over his share of profits from reruns of "The X-Files". It's one of those situations where I have a hard time really sympathizing with either side. The networks are raking in obscene profits, yes, but actors are already paid a lot more money than 99% of the rest of America, so I can't be too sorry for them that they're not getting their "fair share" of profits from reruns and stuff.
A lot of people, even some who are kind of sympathetic to the actors and/or writers, seem to feel this is a really stupid time for them to go on strike. Most likely, the networks will just up the number of prime time hours they devote to newsmagazines, reality shows and game shows — simply dumping what most of us think of as the backbone of TV programming, sitcoms and scritped dramas.
