I guess you have a good point there. As the 'outsider', I can maybe add a little different perspective as to why I think the writers and CC specifically have added episodes like Rain King, HTGSC,etc. I am on my third time through the entire series, have finished watching all the Millenium series and am watching Harsh Realm just to try to figure out what direction CC is going as well as what his message is supposed to be. The first thing that came to mind today after reading your post is how much the XFiles are similar to the book Moby Dick. I managed to plod my way through that tome and concluded that had Melville stuck to the plot and action, the entire book would have had one-half or less of the chapters--probably would have been more interesting as well. I frankly am glad that CC has decided to use this arrangement though, because I think that is why we have had 7 seasons to enjoy--at least we have been able to enjoy whatever part of the show/s that we look for.

You are right--maybe some of the things are contrived and possibly ridiculous to some viewers. However, what CC has done in both XFiles and Millenium is to use episodes like the above two as a forum for social awareness without offering solutions for reform. One of the themes that I have found is loneliness--how many people in this world are alone--not just the elderly. Mulder and Scully may have some sort of a life but they are alone (becoming more and more alone as their family members die.) While I am a shipper, I wouldn't watch if it turned into a soap opera. Another theme in Rain King that I found was just how vulnerable people are under adversity and how gullible they can become under desperate conditions. Of course, there are some individuals who will believe anything they come across--whether or not it makes any sense to you or I.

Rain King, HTGSC along with the ones you mentioned seem to be forcing M and S to take a closer look at their individual lives. Scully seems to recognize that there is more to life than driving all over the country--Mulder just hasn't learned that he needs to "get out of the car." In retrospect, M and S really weren't any different than Sheila and Harold in Rain King in regard to their interpersonal relationship.

Another theme that is very deeply woven into CC's shows is religion. Frankly, I would love to know just what his religious beliefs are. I can only guess that he is looking at the darker side of religion, the end of the world and how that is going to happen, and quite possibly, that while religion can be dark and complex, belief is quite simple.

The series would be much richer if somehow there was more of the science fiction--mythology--conspiracy--etc. However, since the rebels fried all of the "Old Guard" and left only Krychek and CSM as links to the bad guys, I quite frankly don't know when and where they can start with this story line again. Perhaps there will be a need for the next movie to serve as the opening of another chapter in the Alien invasion plot.

As I have said before many times, this show really has something for everybody. It is a wonderfully complex series that includes science fiction, comedy, espionage, mysteries--both "who dunnits" and romance mysteries, mythology, and more.

You have a good point about continuity. I just hope that TPTB decide to eliminate writers who don't pay attention to details, produce stories that put either M or S into idiotic situations, ignore the supporting characters or don't blend the episodes a little better.

Sorry if I offended you. This forum offers the opportunity for lively, intelligent conversations on a mutually interesting topic which is why I come here.
