Subject: little article in Time Out

this was for saturdays ep, and well, i thought it was funny anyway. and its rare for a tv critic to write something nice about TXF. so i thought i'd share. :)

The joy of X
The return of the increasingly playful Mulder and Scully

April 2000: "When's it coming back?" 'Don't know'
May 2000: "When's it coming back?" 'Still don't know. But as soon as we do, we'll let you know.'
June 2000: "Have you heard anything yet?" 'NO. NOW JUST FUCK OFF AND STOP BUGGING US ABOUT IT.'
The 'it' in question was of course 'The X Files', which disappeared in a manner fit for its own storylines four months ago. This week the BBC unearths the remaining 13 episodes of season six, so welcome back Mulder, Scully, assorted conspiracy theorists, bad dudes, and nutters. We missed you.
Some of us, including the many fans who posted their anger to the BBC chatroom at www.bbc.co.uk/cult, missed you alot. Was it their outcry that brought the series back four months after being so rudely interrupted? According to the BBC, not at all; alot of their acquisitions are made in 22 episode seasons which can cause scheduling problems on BBC1 (though not on BBC2, where the show spent 5 happy years before it move) that result in 'series breaks'. Hmmm. With ratings way down from the shows BBC2 heyday, isn't a break a good way to generate some brouhaha from fans and much-needed column inches from the press? Be that as it may, the BBC has not firmed up plans to acquire the next season, which is a shame as this current one has been one of the best.
While the format of having our intrepid Feebs deskbound on background checks has forced some convoluted excuses to get them out and about, the resulting self-contained storylines, playful experimentation with TV conventions and the growing complexity of Mulder and Scully's relationship are a delight, reminiscent of the most interesting phase of 'Moonlighting', when similar experimentation pushed the show into wonderfully surreal territory. Already we've had Steadicam shots in widescreen for a homage to 'The Wizard of Oz', a pastiche of 'Police! Camera! Action!' and a black comedy with Lily Tomlin and Ed Asner, not to mention time travel and body swapping. While tonight's 'Tithonus', based around Tennyson's poem about unwelcome immortality, treads more traditional 'X Files' territory, future goodies include David Duchovny's writing and directing debut in 'The Unnatural', and further down the road, a spin off series for 'The Lone Gunmen' - assuming the BBC buys it, of course. Well, with no 'Match of the Day' they've got £40 million spare right?

ok, so i thought TXF changed to BBC1 in season 3 but hey, 5 sounds better......
