Subject: I too heard a "Tragedy" song
In reply to: Scully'sMyHero 's message, "Sensory Overload" on 21:15:57 09/13/01 Thu

I don't know if it was the SAME song but it was the same IDEA and I, too, cried the first time but even as I cried I was struck by the crass manipulation and how tacky that concept really is at this juncture. Actually, that was one of the reasons I wrote the above response to my BTVS buddy(I, too, had just heard that song for the 25th time before I sat down to type the above message and on the TV behind me were a bunch of talking heads pontificating about how we as Americans SHOULD FEEL for about the 5th time that day and here was a message from a person I KNEW to be compassionate, intellegent and upbeat who was ASHAMED that she wanted relief from the pain). And they are playing one of these songs again as I type THIS message but I can't turn it off because we are under a TORNADO watch. These are beautiful, meaningful songs (this one is by Enya, "Only Time")filled with sound bites of horror and pain and anger by, IMO, a crass and unfeeling media.

Admittedly, songs of this nature have been well-recieved in the past: "God Bless the U.S.A." during the Gulf War, Elton John's adaptation of his anthem at the death of Princess Diana and many, many songs of patriotism during the World Wars...but that said, most of those songs were written with GENUINE sentiment not with this Ray Steven's inspired "sound bite" tackiness.

Well, that's my personal rant and I am sure there are people who enjoy the songs and disagree with my opinion. But I hope that people in Shipperville come to this thread to express their sadness, frustrations, anger and pain in the hope that like REAL TIME neighbors we will be here for each other by offering a comforting shoulder or ear. My feeling is that Shipperville is a community that came together for a positive purpose. In the World as it stands today, that positive purpose is even more vital to our well-being than ever before.
