Well, one example of where keeping the UST going didn't help a TV series is "Dark Angel." It was "on the bubble" for renewal near the end of its second season and the producers made a very deliberate decision to keep the UST between the leads going strong because they thought that resolving it would be more likely to kill the series. . .but the series got cancelled after the second season anyway, despite keeping the "U" in UST.
Also, I was never a big "Friends" watcher, but didn't they resolve the Ross/Rachel thing fairly early on (by which I mean third or fourth season) and have it remain a top ten show for years afterwards?
