Subject: Shipperfic and season one

It seems like I've recently come across a lot of shipperfic that's set during, or just after, the events of season one. That made me wonder about a couple of questions:
1.) If Mulder and Scully hadn't been bound by the "rules" of TV romances (i.e. drag out the UST as long as possible) when do you think they would have gotten together??
IMHO, it would have been early in season two. I can't really see them jumping each other's bodies in season one, tempted though they might have been to do so, for several reasons. One, of course, is that they worked together. Another, is that, at least in season one, there was a hint of Scully actually working *for* Mulder, rather than as his partner (in the pilot ep, she introduced herself by saying "I've been sent to assist you". . .which sort of implies that, at least in the early months, she might have kinda/sorta regarded him as her boss). Finally, there were simply issues of trust and getting to know each other. By early in the second season, however, they'd know each other an entire year and -- this would, especially for Scully, probably be an important point -- they weren't officially working together any more. The only thing keeping them apart at that point was Chris Carter!
2.) If you worked with, and had developed a deep platonic friendship with, a person you were attracted to, how long would you hang around hoping to ignite the spark of romance?
It's hard to answer this question unless you've actually been in the situation, of course, but personally I doubt I'd hang around for six years!
