Mulder and Scully existed in a state of *pure* UST, where they weren't doing it with each other *OR* anybody else!! And, yes, the set-up of XF -- what with Mulder being so consumed about finding out what happened to his sister and the two of them constantly being in danger of losing their lives, their careers and their sanity -- did make it at least semi-plausible that they would go for years on end without pursuing the normal sexual/romantic intimacies of most adults in their 30s.
