Subject: A theory on the MSR and the DRR

I've come up with a theory that I think fans of both the DRR and the MSR can agree on. . . .but who knows? I think the *main* problem that hampered fans from accepting Doggy and Annoying Smiling Agent as substitutes for our beloved Mulder and Scully was the order in which they were introduced. That is, Doggett was introduced first and placed in the position of Scully's new partner, making it seem as though he was "replacing" Mulder both as an X-Files agent and as a possible romantic interest for Scully.
Now, to be fair, I never noticed any hint of romantic interest in Scully on Doggett's part in any of the season eight or nine eps *I* watched, but then I only watched the ones with Mulder in them and maybe Doggy behaved himself when the original alpha male of XF was around. And that sort of thing is certainly pretty subjective; after all, there were plenty of people who watched classic XF eps like "Detour", "Triangle" and "The Unnatural" and still claimed that they saw no evidence that Mulder and Scully were romantically intrested in each other! Apparently there was *something* going on, in at least a few eps, that led at least some fans to believe that Doggy was attracted to Scully (almost everybody seemed in agreement that it was one way; I don't recall anybody suggesting that Scully ever seriously considered Doggy as a replacement for her beloved Mulder on any level other than a purely professional one. . .and she wasn't even too thrilled with that.) Evenutally ASA showed up and Doggy got a potential UST interest of his own, but by that time the damage had been done.
I think things would have worked out much better if Reyes had been the original "new" agent introduced at the beginning of season eight, with Doggy showing up later. After all, when Scully was MIA for part of season two they didn't give Mulder another female partner; they gave him Krycek. If they felt the show needed a full-time male lead, they could have boosted Skinner's role to lead status a season earlier.
