While, IMHO, the evidence is pretty clear that M&S conceived William the old-fashioned way, I could actually live with the concept that Mulder and Scully are lovers who had need of medical assitance to help them conceive. . .that would simply put them in the same boat as millions of other couples who love each other but have fertility problems. (Like all the folks in "Small Potatoes"!)
Only thing I would question is: if they were both in love with each other *and* deliberately attempting to conceive a child, why not get married before the second in vitro atttempt?? Despite the fact that it's not nearly what it once was, there is still some stigma attached to unwed motherhood and if M&S had admitted to being in love with each other, were expressing that love sexually and were hoping to conceive a child to together, I'd think Mulder would want to spare her the embarrassment of an unwed pregnancy.
Plus, as we saw in the S8 episode where the nurse came out and asked Mulder and Doggy "Is one of you the husband?" if M&S were married, they would have the legal right to make medical decisions for the other if one of them was incapacitated. . .and, given how often those two end up in the hospital, that's something they need!
