As for CC's change of heart regarding his characters' hearts (sorry, the romantic stuff:) read my reply to CW above.

I think there's a possibility that JD had feelings for Scully in S8. Just not in the way many people insist. JD saw Scully as a replacement for his lost wife and son. It wasn't personal, it was psychological. If his feelings had continued, it would've been reason for him to see a psychiatrist, not ask her out on a date or marry her. He may have had feelings, but he was no threat to the MSR. He was a threat to himself, living in fantasy instead of reality. The only way there'd ever be a threat to the MSR is if Scully left Mulder (or vice versa) for another. She wouldn't, no matter how real Doggett's feelings may have been. There's lots of talk about Skinner loving Scully, but no one's seemed to care about his threatening the MSR, only Doggett. Possible reason: They like Skinner, they hate Doggett.

Mulder's quest for his sister has been accomplished, at least to his satisfaction. His quest for the truth is probably never-ending. It's many people's quest. His new quest is to be with his family. Goals change. People (characters) change.

And, I hate to say it, I wish it wasn't true, but most shows need an element of UST to keep it interesting. It's a "hook." Some shows obviously don't need it: shows with different actors and whole new stories each week (Outer Limits, Unsolved Mysteries) but I think most dramas and sitcoms need at least a little UST. It's on the recipe of things you need to create a successful show, book, etc. It's like the "great" stories of all time including Shakespeare. It's what's required to make stage plays work. Some sort of conflict/love and hate are *required* or you don't have a play. Both inner conflict (should I or shouldn't I tell her I love her?) and conflict between two characters. If anyone disagrees, take it up with my drama professor and Language Arts teachers. So needing UST between the two new leads isn't so bad. Two same-sex agents would be boring. They could be gay, but I'm not sure it'd have the same appeal.
