You make some good points about the Doggett/Skinner/Scully relationships. Personally, I never saw anything to hint that Skinner's affection for Scully was in any way erotic. It always reminded me more of a father/daughter relationship. I think the main problem with the attitude Doggett took toward Scully was how soon it formed. He began working on the X-Files with her and almost *immediately* he began acting very protective of her and/or emotionally connected to her, which just seemed. . .odd. Yes, Skinner has basically this same attitude toward Scully, but in his case it developed naturally, over a period of several years. Skinner did *not* act this way toward Scully in season one or early season two. And, as you point out, everybody likes Skinner.
I *TOTALLY* agree that most TV shows need an element of romance or UST to be succesful. That's been *MY* point ever since I started watching XF!! In fact, this is something that attracts me to almost every TV show I've ever watched on a regular basis (i.e. "Remington Steele" and "Moonlighting" in the 80s; the currently running "JAG"). What I've been griping about in this post has been CC's refusal to acknowledge that UST has always been an integral part of XF's appeal. He kept saying that those of us who watched it for the MSR just didn't understand what the show was all about. *NOW* he seems to be saying (don't know if he's actually come out and said it, but actions speak louder than words) that "Of course, UST or romantic attraction between the main characters has always been an important part of what made The X-Files so wonderful. Since we no longer have it between Mulder and Scully, let's have it between Doggett and Reyes!"
