George:

You understand exactly what has bothered me for years about how people judged Brian by his outward reactions, and never trying to check to see what was making him behave this way.

No wonder he ceased to "give a shit" in the end. I wouldn't either. I never made a lot of money, but I never compromised who I was and what was REALLY important to me. Brian was exactly the same way, and he was being asked to compromise something that his soul required...the kind of music that had his heart.

I don't think money meant much to him, except to flaunt the status he'd risen to, in spite of his critics. He spent it like water, and not always wisely. It probably meant very little to him for its own sake. Unlike the rest of the lads, who were more like "normal" people, who would go for the dough...even if they compromised their art for it. This is no condemnation of the "normal" at all. It's just that not everyone has the same mind set, and not everyone sees "gain" as the real bottom line of life. It eventually cost Brian everything...tragic...but overall, I think he was better off for not compromising his principles. His poor body may have fallen appart, but I think he was finally satisfied with himself.
