There's a Youtube video where Brian is telling the interviewer he had a virus in the U.S.

Pneumonia can be a complication of a bad virus. It's what usually kills people who've gotten the Flu. That happened to me last October. I got the Flu during a time of extreme stress at work, and got pneumonia as a complication. I was off work for 6 weeks after that!

I've discovered you can't trust news reporting in regards to why things happen to people. Accuracy isn't their strong suit! In L.A. they reported Brian died as a result of an asthma attack while swimming, but the medical examiner says his lungs were clear of any disease at that time.
