Subject: Re: Why is Brian Demonised?
In reply to: Linda 's message, "Re: Why is Brian Demonised?" on 08:51:57 01/07/11 Fri

I don't know whether Brian really beat up Anita (Bill also mentions Suki in his Stone Alone), or how often it happened if indeed it did happen. If he did, then I think the drugs had a lot to do with it. I don't recall either Pat Andrews or Linda Lawrence ever mentioning any beatings. In fact, I remember Gerry saying that she had asked Pat the question, and that Pat replied that no, he never beat her. Make of that what you will.

I would venture to guess that the reason why Brian is "demonised" is that the Stones have failed to protect his legacy (his musical contributions, of course, but also his image). All you hear from them these days, when you hear anything about Brian, is derogatory comments. I'll make an exception for Bill, whose Stone Alone was far more balanced. But the other three haven't had a nice thing to say in years. In Keith's case, it's been going on for decades.

I don't know what makes them do that. But unless I am mistaken, it's a rather unique situation in the world of rock music. John Lennon and Paul McCartney were at each other's throat for years, but that stopped on Paul's part after John was murdered.

Syd Barrett f*cked up badly, but I never read a bad comment about him from his former band mates, who I think also protected his interests.

I don't think that there is any rock musician that f*cked on a grander scale than Allen Collins. In his case, most of his band members are also dead, but the fans obviously still think very fondly of him and hold his musical and songwriting abilities in very high regards.

The only difference I see in Brian's case is what I said in the beginning: the crapola that the others have been saying about him. Repeat a lie often enough and it becomes the truth... :(
