Mick and Keith were good guys. I liked both of them, but these days Im not so sure Id get on with Keith. Hes changed, become bitter, and I have my theory on why hes so bitter about Brian. Mick is just a very nice person, very business oriented, and took an active role in the finances and business decisions of the band at an early stage. Brian had taken that position at the outset, but Brians decisions werent always the best, he saw to himself rather than the band as a whole, and as the band gained in popularity it became necessary to enlarge the scope so to speak. Mick saw a need and stepped in. At first Brian consulted Mick, but as Micks expertise grew, so did Brians insecurities. Im not sure about Brian being bi-polar, its certainly a possibility, but nothing was ever diagnosed. He was very insecure, and his paranoias were frustrating. Many times I listened to him rant, tried to put forward my opinions only to be told I didnt understand. I think I did, but being only in my early 20s, I had my own insecurities too, and a raging out of control drug problem. I was hardly the one to play psychologist! It was hard seeing a good friend tie himself up in knots over what I thought was a lot of hysteria. Of course, I came along mostly after Anita defected, thats when I really got to know Brian, so I have no idea what he was like before Anita left and the police harassment started. I know that relationships between Brian and the Lads got strained. Mick told me Brian should have "gotten over that bitch" but he really didnt, ever. Mick wasnt fond of Anita. I think Mick liked Brian until Brian wouldnt let go of things that Mick saw as inconsequential. Micks a Leo, takes things very pragmatically, and is egotistical. His thinking was the band must come first, and Brian drove himself away from the band. When that happened, Mick gave up on him. And then Brian wanted to start over. In a lot of ways Brian was a spoiled baby lashing out. He was glad to finally be released from something he couldnt handle anymore, but a lot of that was his own doing. Dont get me wrong, I loved the guy, but even I could see all the things that were wrong with the way Brian handled things. The Lads were not the problem, Brian was. And Anita.
