Subject: "Revolution"

Since I've been watching the Olympics, I've been subjected to approximately 8 bazillion commercials for "Revolution". A couple of comments on the show:

1. I never watched "Jericho" but isn't it the same basic premise?

2. Why do the producers of the show assume that losing electricity would automatically cause American civilization to revert to some sort of stone age (or at leats Medieval) level of civilization? We've only had electricity for about 120 years. Yet I'm reasonably sure that most places in the United States were relatively "civilized" in the 1880s and 1890s, despite their lack of electricity.
