I'm guessing Sam is Korean veteran. He's too young for WWll. His son is AWOL with a rather crazy mother who wrote a hardship letter I'm not sure how he got home but leave was granted for soldiers to go home for funerals or major illness. There were military flights which is what I assume he used. My guess is he went to Canada where a number of guys went.
