I was sad to see Scully's mother die, but I have to admit that M&S are now at least at an age where they would more-or-less be expected to be having their parents die. It was weird that they lost three of their four parents during the first seven seasons of the show, while they were in their 30s, as that's pretty unusual for a couple in their 30s in modern-day America.

I actually agree that the dream sequence went on a bit too long. But I got a huge kick out of Mulder in a cowboy hat! And I enjoyed the quick peek of the Lone Gunmen.

The sort of vague explanation as to why they were apart was that Mulder (with his paranoia, his wild theories, etc.) had just become too emotionally exhausting for Scully to deal with; that even though she still loved him, she just couldn't live with him on a daily basis. I think the house they were in at the end was just someplace they had rented in Texas (like a tourist cabin) as the landscape still looked Texas-y. It's possible that the fact that they both miss William so much could have played a part in their breakup, too; I know that a marriage often ends in the wake of a child's death and -- while placing a child for adoption is not the same thing as death -- it is still the "loss" of a child and could play havoc on the couple's relationship.

The William stuff does seem to be a very important part of this revival. My brother, who is adopted, is having some very mixed feelings. He's a huge XF fan, but doesn't like lines in which placing a baby for adoption is equated with "throwing a baby away".

I can't remember if you ever read fanfic or not, det. but I've written one (which is sort of very vaguely a follow-up to one I wrote in 2001 at the end of season eight) in which Mulder and Scully are living undercover with their son. If you're interested in reading it, just email me at tapw63@hotmail.com
