I don’t think 350,000 dollars is attracting good head coaching candidates. Canisius getting Reggie Witherspoon was a bargain $275,000. I personally thought Reggie Witherspoon was at least making $300,000 a season. The salary is going to be a major problem getting anyone even in the quality of a Jim Baron or Reggie Witherspoon today. Mark Schmidt of the Bonnies according to one report I saw online of basketball head coaches salaries is making $1.8 million a season. I personally have heard it was $1.3 million a year. Canisius University salary wise is out of touch with today. I am sorry that is bringing the Griffs a George Halcovage III heaven help us. That just is a waste of time and I think we are going to be in the same exact situation in two years as Reggie Witherspoon. The KAC is a joke and $350,000 is a joke. If you don’t start with a $1 million a year salary why bother in today’s Division 1 college basketball. The $1 million a year gets the Griffs to competitive mid major basketball team today. That is reality for today’s times.

You’re never going to be able to offer more money in the KAC because it isn’t a Division I college basketball facility today. Read some of the old Buffalo News papers online with Griffs basketball in the mid 1970’s. Canisius AD Dr Daniel Starr a good man who taught me in school and was one of my bosses that I considered a friend. Quote in the 1970’s the report asked about Canisius continuing to play games at Buffalo Memorial Auditorium because of the dramic drop in Griffs basketball attendance because of the Buffalo Sabres and Buffalo Braves. Quote KAC isn’t an option because I feel if you are going to be a Division I college basketball team you got to play all our games in Buffalo Memorial Auditorium. Ok he gets it you can’t be a Division I college basketball team and be successful in the KAC. It’s been ridiculous watching this KAC joke for 20 plus years. Once Dr Starr retired it was all over too many people running Canisius basketball don’t know what they are doing. I would have fired AD Bill Maher he was a do nothing at UB and continues to do nothing at Canisius. He couldn’t even say Reggie Witherspoon was fired which is what he was. You can’t win with people like that I am sorry but you can’t. AD Tim Dillion was another idiot that Canisius hired we have too many people that don’t know what a successful Division 1 college basketball team looks like. It’s like Prince sang in a song Rasberry Bure do something next to nothing but different than the day before that sums up the decision makers when it comes to Griffs basketball today. The Canisius University President doesn’t impress me at all he doesn’t seem much of a leader just someone collecting a check until something better comes along. If the Canisius President had any backbone he would fire Maher and clean out that whole swamp of small time thinkers and not doers fire them all and start over. The Canisius President should be on the phone to Terry Pegula asking to rent the Key Bank Center and if Terry Pegula says no you pull the Griffs hockey team out of Harbor Center you use that as leverage to get a good deal at Key Bank Center for Griffs basketball. Play on Monday nights we would be better off doing that instead of playing KAC on Saturday up against the other three Big 4 basketball schools, the Buffalo Sabres and Buffalo Bandits along with the Buffalo Bills. Make Monday Night Griffs basketball night at the Key Bank Center. You will get sports fans on Monday night with nothing else going on locally that night. We are never gaining more market share at KAC on Saturday and Sunday afternoons we are going no where as a team doing that. You aren’t beating the Buffalo Sabres or Buffalo Bandits on Saturday’s it’s a waste of time. And the KAC move was supposed to be temporary yet here we are still stuck in the KAC. The Griffs hockey team has better facilities than our longest and most important sport college basketball at Canisius. It’s obvious Canisius University doesn’t care about college basketball as long as the Griffs are still in the KAC offering $350,000 nothing is changing but the year. If Griffs fans can’t see what I am talking about again you are part of the problem not the solution to solve the Griffs basketball attendance and market share issues in Buffalo/Western New York today in my opinion. Go Griffs! Let’s Go Buffalo
