Subject: Passing of Roger Brown

The Canisius men's basketball program is saddened to learn of the passing of former Griffs guard Roger Brown.

A Buffalo native and a three-time letter-winner, he served as a team captain during the 1969-70 campaign.

🙏🏀

The 1965-70s era was a great time to watch Canisius basketball. Andy Anderson, John Morrison, Tomy Masiello, Mike Macaluso, Tom Pasternack ... I think I became a fan after reading about the 1963 NIT finalists in the News and the Courier.

My father and I would drive in from the bubs to watch many a doubleheader at the Aud, in the days when we regularly drew 7-8,000 per game.

We usually sat in the gays (money was tight) but it was a real treat when we could move down to the blues or the reds. Never to the golds, they monitored access to those seats pretty closely.

Great memories.

I believe Roger was the guy who was assigned to guard Calvin Murphy when he made his debut in a freshman game against the Griffs played before a packed house at Erie C.C. The young Griffs won the game, and both teams scored over a hundred pts, and this was before the 3pt shot. Roger did a good job vs. Calvin, but Calvin still scored a ton of points. Rest in peace Roger, and Go Griffs.
