Subject: Game#1 Analysis - Arizona
A very tall task both literally and figuratively for the Griffs against what could be a Final Four team. A team who at times had a future lottery pick and a front line bigger than many NBA teams. But here we go, the good, the bad, and the unknown -
The Good -
*Paul McMillan was obviously the best player on the floor for the Griffs - 20 points/4 rebounds/3 assists. Made a variety of shots at all three levels. A little out of control at times. Needs to eliminate the 3 turnovers.
*Dylan Godfrey was impressive. 13 points in 20 minutes and showed the ability to shoot from deep. Plays hard and is very instinctual.
*Tana Kopa. Similar to Godfrey but not as athletic. 11 points including two from three. Probably this year's version of Siem.
*Cam Palesse. It's obvious that he is going to need to earn time with this new staff and things weren't great in the forst half. But I thought he really stepped up in the second half and played hard. Finished with 7 points and 5 boards.
*Jas Sangha. Got from him exactly what I expected and what he has shown throughout his career. He battled against in extremely good front line and finished with 6 points and 3 boards. Both made shots came from three. Would like to see him be more of a force down low against lesser opponents.
*Anthony Benard. Did some nice things. A true point. Handles it well, not a real threat to score (3 points) and has to eliminate the 4 turnovers - some of which were unforced.
*Will Scott. Not an impressive stat line but I thought he handled their pressure quite well and the moment wasn't too big for him.
*Coaching. I liked the style and the offensive sets. Christian is definitely demanding and is going to make guys accountable. They will get better and better as guys learn - and hopefully accept their roles - moving forward.
*Shot a respectable 43% from the field/39% from 3/77% from the line. And 19 turnovers against that team isn't awful.
The Bad -
*I'm not going to be real critical or detailed after one game against the 10th ranked team in the country but...
*Gianni Thompson. Uninspired effort - reflected in him getting 10 minutes of game action. Two points and four turnovers.
*EVDP. First game in the US as a freshman against Arizona but I certainly expected much more. Didn't score in just 13 minutes. Not a good night.
*Tyson Oghene. He was out there. Played 16 minutes but was invisible.
*Rebounding margin of 43-25 isn't shocking but they need to obviously be much better on the boards.
The Unknown
*How this team will respond at home on Saturday against Bonaventure who rolled pretty easily against CSUN last night. A lot of new faces on both sides. Do they recognize and understand the rivalry?
*I knew that Alonso Easterling is going to redshirt and I assume that's why he didn't make the trip. Is that the case with Carter Jackson also? TJ Porter still rehabbing. No idea what the timetable for him is.

Jas Sangha -- Any more details on what happened?, Tue, November 05 2024, 8:21:13
Jasman Sangha was ejected after trying to stop UA’s Henri Veesaar from dunking with one hand.
Sangha appeared to pull Veesaar’s non-shooting arm, and Veesaar glared at him afterward. After a review, officials ruled it a Flagrant 2 on Sangha, who was forced to lead the floor, but also handed Veesaar a Class A Technical for the glare, meaning Veesaar would only get to take two free throws instead of four.
I hate to have one less big man on the floor.
Go Griffs!

Horrible call. Even the U of A announcers thought it was a bad interpretation of the rule.

Re: Jas Sangha -- Griffine (Reason for optimism’s), Tue, November 05 2024, 14:42:58
Our guys were overwhelmed at the start by Arizona’s size, length and intensity o both ends of the floor. We settled down and found ways to score after that, but could not stop their stellar guards or compete on the glass.
McMillan is an excellent guard who can be a star in the MAAC. Godfrey can find his shots outside and hit them, while Palese and Kona can play at a high level. Bernard and Van der plays were outmatched along with most others except for Senegal who played hard. sad to see Thompson play without any energy or passion.
All n all, a mixed bag. Maybe kids like Ogbene and Scott will emerge with time. Would be nice to beat Bona again.
