Today is 8/16/2012. 35 years ago (in 1977), I remember talking to a friend who was an ardent Elvis Presley fan. Elvis died that day, despite numerous rumors to the contrary.

A reporter asked Elvis (When Elvis was in the US Army & about to go to Germany), "Do you feel you were lucky or do you have something other people don't have?"
It could've been a sincere question or maybe the reporter was trying to bait Elvis into saying something seemingly immodest or easy to quote out-of-context.
Elvis said, "I was lucky. I came along at a time when there was no trend. I came along just in time."

When there's no trend, people may not think about it. After all, what is there to think about or discuss when there's ... nothing?

I don't imagine any teenager asking another, "Did you ever notice there's no new trend in the music business?"

Maybe Elvis didn't realize there was a lack of a trend for music teenagers like to hear ... Until he started a trend!

This quote expresses a typical situation: "Don't it always seem to go That you don't know what you've got Till it's gone" from "Big Yellow Taxi"

What can also be true is people don't know what's missing/lacking until the void is filled. Some say, "Now I don't know how I lived without it!"

People may know what they don't want, but don't know how to get rid of what they don't want & replace it with ... They don't know what they want until they experience it.

'This is boring!' (Translation: Something is missing or hasn't yet arrived/been discovered or invented.)
'What do you want to do?'
'I don't know. What do you want to do?'
'This situation is missing something.'
'Yeah, so what's missing?'
'That certain ... Je ne sais quoi.'
'What? What the heck is je ne sais quoi?'
'I don't know what."
'If you don't know what it means, why did you say it?'

Je ne sais quoi (Translation: I don't know what.) Please pardon my French.

Why haven't people bought what you offer? Maybe they don't realize there's a void or problem in their lives. You can try pushing a solution but if people don't know what it's supposed to solve, you won't sell it.

Instead of just showing how well your solution solves a problem, inform people about the problem. When they recognize the problem in their lives or somebody else's, then they have something significant to think about & discuss.

If your solution solves a problem, does it also end the whole negative situation? Example - A freezer doesn't freeze food anymore. The person, who has rapidly thawing food, needs a new freezer. S/he also needs something else. S/he has no open space for a new freezer until the old freezer is removed. Even when an appliance is removed from a house, it should still be disposed of properly - preferably recycled.

Many big retailers stock products, but they don't offer ways to dispose of old products. Is there an opportunity in that situation for a small retailer?
