Date Posted: 20:20:35 01/07/05 Fri January 8, 2005 would've been Elvis Presley's 70th birthday. A reporter asked Elvis, Do you feel you were lucky or do you have something other people don't have? Maybe the reporter was trying to bait Elvis into saying something seemingly immodest or easy to quote out-of-context. Elvis said, "I was lucky. I came along at a time when there was no trend. I came along just in time." Accurate, yes. The whole answer, no. We all have something -- a talent -- other people don't have. We all have positive things to offer to others. They may not seem so exciting or special to us or to our acquantances. Imagine “Colonel” Tom Parker, Elvis's manager, saying, "Here's what you do. Play your guitar & sing in a way nobody else has. Sing about somebody being a hound dog & ficitious hotel. Adults will protest, but here's the best part - Wiggle your hips & girls will scream. The U.S. Post Office & other countries will issue stamps with your picture on them. People will pay to watch guys imitate you while you're alive & for decades after you've died. You'll be a movie star & proclaimed as the king of a whole genre of music. We'll both be multi-millionaires." Would Elvis have said this? "Yes, sir, that's right." Or would he have figured this “Colonel” spent too much time sipping too much moonshine? I hope it's not a hard-sell getting you to believe you can be very successful. It can happen by finding out what's missing. Warning- Prospective customers may not realize something is "missing." Example from 1960's- Americans are driving reasonably good-looking, American-made cars with plenty of leg-room & heaters for those who are in cold climates. So why did millions buy small, ugly Volswagen Beetles? Volkswagen had the right marketing. I got the idea for this post partly from Dana Blankenhorn. I've heard him talk & seen his missives about successful people's clues. Apparently Volkswagen had a clue, but as Dana said, having a clue isn't permanent. People & companies who have a clue now, may be clueless later. Those who are clueless now, may get get a clue. Volkswagen screwed up by making & trying to market better-looking, bigger vehicles with the "Volkswagen" name. Fortunately for the company, it formed the Audi brand because it got a clue again. Volkswagen meant small & ugly. So when Volkswagen made bigger, good-looking vehicles, it made a big mistake. Can you imagine a student saying, on career day, "I'm going to sell the ugliest cars in America & I'm going to get them from a foreign country. I'll be rich." The other students would've laughed, because their common-sense would push them away from an idea like that. But yet ... Dana has a bit about being successful by doing what others refuse to do. It works in other ways also. "The secret to a successful mass-market Web site lies in doing what 99% of companies avoid like the plague." You can read it all after clicking on - http://www.a-clue.com/archive/02/cl021202.htm Many of my prospective clients are competing with Wal-Mart & ShopKo. But I have a clue for them & you, Sears, Roebuck, Montgomery Ward & Kmart were big & very successful (seemed to have a clue). Montgomery Ward is gone. Sears & Kmart merged to avoid possible bankruptcy. But it doesn't mean they have a clue. Small businesses can easily get & implement clues.
