Date Posted: 994786044PDT Just looked over several of the MPA Marine Protection areas proposed for Southern Caifornia and I'm not pleased. Here's a few of the worst in my opinion: "West end Catalina Seabass" NO MORE!!!!!!! From Arrow point to Ribbon Rock (NO FISHING!!!) Proposed name of MPA: West End State Marine Reserve (Santa Catalina Island) Proposed boundaries: Northern: Arrow Point (33° 28.65'N, 118° 32.32'W) north along longitude 118° 32.32'W to a distance of 1 nautical mile offshore. Southern: Ribbon Rock (33° 26.32'N, 118° 34.36'W) west along latitude 33° 26.32'N to a distance of 1 nautical mile offshore. Offshore boundary is 1 nautical mile from shore. Total Area: 7.29 square nautical miles Total Shoreline length: 8.28 nautical miles Does this encompass an existing MPA site? No. This is a new proposed marine protected area. Habitats: Rocky reef, kelp, and sand. Depth range 0 to 135 fathoms, or 0 to 247 meters. Proposed regulations: No commercial or recreational fishing permitted Criteria and rationale for recommendation: The proposed West End State Marine Reserve (Santa Catalina Island) will create a new SMR in an area now open to recreational and commercial extractive activities. This reserve site will significantly improve protection for marine organisms located on the west end of the island, a unique and different region than those parts of the island proposed for the Wrigley Institute of Environmental Science SMR and Avalon State Marine Park. Consequently, a site on the west end of Santa Catalina Island should play an important role in the proposed network. West end island habitats have long been attractive sites for users engaged in both extractive and nonconsumptive activities. Included within the proposed SMR boundaries will be shallow and deepwater habitat, including kelp beds; habitat diversity will vary within SMR boundaries due also to variations in wave exposure. Inclusion of this site, together with the proposed Wrigley Institute of Environmental Science SMR and Avalon State Marine Park will provide representative coverage of most island habitat types. "No more Rocky PT Seabass" This one takes out Rocky from the Flat Rock to Vicente. Completely eleminates the areas we've caught Seabass the last two years. Proposed name of MPA: Lunada Bay State Marine Reserve Proposed boundaries: Northern: Flat Rock Point (33° 47.81'N, 118° 24.56'W) west along latitude 33° 47.81'N to a distance of 1000 feet offshore. Southern: Point Vicente (33° 44.48'N, 118° 24.71'W) west along latitude 33° 44.48'N to a distance of 1000 feet offshore. Offshore boundary is 1000 feet from shore. Total Area: 0.77 square nautical miles Total Shoreline length: 4.85 nautical miles Does this encompass an existing MPA site? No. This is a new proposed marine protected area. Habitats: Rocky reef, boulders, flat rock, cobblerock, and coves. Depth range 0 to 8 fathoms, or 0 to 14 meters. Proposed regulations: No commercial or recreational fishing permitted. Criteria and rationale for recommendation: The rocky intertidal zone extending along this portion of the peninsula supports diverse algal and invertebrate communities. Studies in this region and elsewhere have documented negative impacts of collecting on intertidal populations. Several intertidal sites, including those at Lunada Bay and Flat Rock, are easily accessible and are popular locations for visitor exploration and educational field trips. Sites at Lunada Bay and Flat Rock also have been the subjects of research detailing long-term changes in intertidal seaweed populations. This proposed SMR includes the most extensive rocky intertidal habitat south of Malibu (northern Santa Monica Bay) and represents a logical and appropriate addition to the draft network. Protection is concentrated on habitat located within 1,000 feet of shore with emphasis on protecting intertidal and shallow subtidal life from extractive activities. You'll find more info of proposed closers here: http://www.dfg.ca.gov/mrd/mlpa/concepts_south.html Too many to list. Check out what they want to do to your area.
