Subject: Confessions of a Nerd...

Sorry, no quote this time (I will next time, I promise!). I must confess, I'm a nerd. I've just finished a project for a history class. I found a kit and built an Edison-style phonograph that records on plastic party cups (and plays back)! If that doesn't qualify as a nerd, I don't know what does.

I think your project sounds "very cool" indeed Marcinda!
- the "DJ" in me is very proud of you and intrigued by your creation!
And, now I know who to turn to when my own turntable "expires"!
They're not as readily available to the average consumer these days as they were in times past! ...
And ...
- in the past year or so ...
- thanks to Goodwill ...
- I have re-accumulated quite a collection of vinyl 45's and LP's! :)

- found a quote for ya ...
"Be nice to nerds ..."
"Chances are you'll end up working for one!" :)
- Bill Gates

BC,

Love the quote! As for vinyl, I've got a pretty big collection of it myself (I call it and all of my cd's "research materials" - great way to justify buying them) :0). Yard sales are a great place to find vinyl as well. Sometimes you can get the whole lot for a flat price, when you get home just weed out what you want. There are several websites such as www.popsike.com or www.vinylaalbum.com where you can research what prices they are going for. If nothing else, some of the album covers can be framed and make some interesting art for your walls if you don't want the album!

you're welcome Marcinda! i'm glad you like it! :)
and, thanks for the info. and links regarding the "vinyl" music!
among my recent finds, I came across a copy of the "Abbey Road" LP by the Beatles, and a copy of their "White Album" ...
funny you mentioned it 'cause we have a "music room" of sorts and, we're planning to frame some Beatles 45's and the two albums i mentioned ...
and, recently ordered a copy of a photo of my all-time fav DJ / Wolfman Jack and a 45 of "Clap for the Wolfman" to frame also!

I'm like Neeney - I would love to see a photo of your musical project! :)

I, too, consider myself to be a "nerd" by whatever definition you may choose. :-) My brother and I once made a list of all the things that qualified us as being "nerdy" and once had a group just for people like us called "Nerdular Nerdance" on a social networking website.
Marcinda, your project sounds very cool! How long did it take you to build it? I'm sure you got a great grade on that project!

Hi, Valerie!

I love the idea of the website! It took me a little over 3 hours to build the project. I lost a spring at one point but I was able to modify a spring from a ball point pen to replace it. I also did a PowerPoint presentation on the history of the phonograph, gramophone and the birth of the recording industry. It was 49 slides and that took about 6 hours to put together. I incorporated a couple of early sound clips (one by Edison himself!). All that time doesn't even include the time spent researching! I'll post pictures soon.

Wow, Marcinda! That sounds pretty awesome! Do you have an interest in building stuff like that or in the recording industry? I would have liked to have sat in on that class. It sounds like it was really interesting!
I have an old Victrola (it doesn't have the horn) from 1925 that was a sweet 16 gift. I also have an extensive collection of old, old records for it. The thing is so loud because there's no volume control and it used to scare my cat when I played it. I have a lot of big band and musicals and a few classical pieces. I don't like to play it much because the needle mechanism is so delicate and expensive to fix if something happens.

Good morning Marcinda!
Your project sounds "very cool" indeed!
I've been in the lobby of the mass communications building at MTSU but have never taken the time to walk through and take a "look / see" all the way around.
At one time my oldest son thought about entering the master's program for studio recording at MTSU.
