Subject: Martial Arts Workshop & BBQ Day

I sent the following Email to several people yesterday, but I've decided to start a thread about it here, as it saves me from having to mass-spam people about it as details develop/change. :p
Makes life easier for everyone.

(BEGIN)

Hello one and all,

Mid-semester holidays are nearly upon us now, which gives us an opportunity
to get together and have a nice friendly martial arts workshop.

Here are some anticipated FAQs...

* WHAT IS THE PURPOSE OF THIS WORKSHOP?
This workshop will be an opportunity for you guys to ask questions if there
is something you want to know, as well as an opportunity for you to
showcase any techniques you have that you may like to share. It will also
be a great opportunity for everyone to watch and train with people who
practice different styles, in other words, cross-training. Cross training
is often a rare opportunity for many martial artists, as we tend to only
train with people from our own school/style of fighting. It is always
beneficial to train with people from different styles.

If you already know what questions or contributions you have, please let me
know ASAP so I can incorporate it as part of the informal 'programme' for
the day.

* LOCATION?
Because this group consists of people living both in the inner city and
Inner and Greater Western suburbs of Sydney, the workshop will occur in a
more 'neutral' location that is convenient for most people to get to. My
two suggestions are either PARRAMATTA or STRATHFIELD, as these two
locations are midway between the Greater West and inner city regions.
Please let me know which location you'd prefer, and I'll select the one
with the most popular vote.

* WILL THERE BE ANY CONTACT SPARRING?
There will most like be some contact sparring, however, I will try to keep
it as controlled as possible. I will be bringing along various kinds of
equipment such as pads, bags etc for hitting against in order to minimise
the need for full contact sparring. Also, there will be _NO_ free sparring
allowed.

* WHY CAN'T WE HAVE FULL CONTACT FREE SPARRING? (More on Safety)
Because I'm *not* a qualified nor insured martial arts instructor. Those of
you who have trained with me before know that I am very wary of my legal
obligations and more importantly, legal liabilities in undertaking such a
venture. This workshop is nothing more than an informal get together of
martial arts enthusiasts -- kinda like people who meet at a park to play a
game of footy or cricket with their friends. For legal reasons (ie: to
minimise the chance of getting my butt sued in the event of any injury), I
will *not* be sanctioning any form of free sparring. Yeah, I know it sounds
dull, but it beats a lawsuit. It's all fun and games until someone breaks a
neck. =^P

If you have any training/safety equipment, such as bags, pads, gloves, mats
(NB: I don't have mats -- so it would be really helpful if someone brought
mats) etc., then by all means please bring them along.

* WHAT WILL THIS WORKSHOP COVER?
I already have some ideas/techniques that I'd like to go through with the
group.
As I mentioned before, if there are any specific techniques (specific kind
of attack/counterattack) you'd like to see, or if there are any specific
techniques you'd like to show everyone else, then let me know by the end of
the week. I will then compile an informal programme of the day's events.

* WHAT'S THIS ABOUT A BARBECUE?
Because this day is intended to be a fun day for us to get together and
clobber each other (safely!), I thought it would be nice idea if we could
have a barbecue afterwards so that we can compare notes over some nice
snags and cold drinks. I'm sure that Parramatta Park will have some nice
barbecue locations and coin operated stoves -- as for Strathfield, I'll
have to check it out sometime soon.
The idea would be for everyone to bring:
* Something to chuck on the barbie -- sausages, steaks etc.
* Something to snack on -- chips, salads, finger food etc.
* Something to drink -- 'nuff said.

Let me know if you'd like to come along or not.

Cheers.
